Vick likely to be suspended by the NFL
Posted July 18th, 2007 by Jim WilliamsMichael Vick who has been one of the National Football League’s most marketable and visible superstar’s will likely be suspended.
Both the Falcons, the NFL issued a statement calling for the withholding of judgment while condemning the allegations listed in the 18-page indictment — some include Vick being present at the execution of dogs. It also mentioned the league's new player conduct policy, which has led to the suspension of several other NFL players before the legal process has run its course.
So when the news hit the NFL office yesterday afternoon it was not a surprise it was more like an explosion. Michael Vick superstar quarterback, $130 million dollar superstar who endorses everything from cell phones to Nike shoes was in trouble.
Sources close to NFL officials told me that presently the level of the federal indictment against Vick for his alleged involvement a dog fighting ring has the league upset and looking for answers. Meanwhile clubs like Cincinnati and Tennessee both of whom have had star players disciplined by the NFL wanted to be kept advised on the Vick situation.
Those same sources did not rule out a possible suspension for Vick this season. The leagues newly exercised criminal behavior imitative puts the NFL and the star quarterback directly in the spotlight.
Atlanta owner Arthur Blank and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodall will likely have a meeting either this week or next with Vick and his legal representatives. The heart to heart will likely take place at the league offices and depending on the answers and possible evidence proved by Vick we should know the extent of the leagues plans for one their biggest stars.
We have all heard of the allegations stemming from the dog fighting indictment and the details of the cruel and in humane killing of the animals by electrocution, drowning, shooting and other sadistic ways that the animals were killed.
At this moment as it should be Michael Vick is innocent until proven guilty, however this story transcends sports and will be a focal point on all the major news channels with CNN, MSNBC and Fox News all leading with the- “Michael Vick Indictment” this morning.
You can’t turn on a sports talk radio station in this country where Vick is not the lead story and in the court of public opinion he is under fire.
If we have learned anything about rushing to judgment we only have to look at the Duke rape case.
But the Richmond's U.S. District Court from early 2001 through the spring of 2007 has been carefully collecting evidence and building a case against Vick and a number of others named in the indictment.
The federal government has deemed dog fighting a felony and Vick is up against the Department of Agriculture, the FBI, the IRS and all of them have been collecting evidence.
Michael Vick the superstar needs to come clean on everything he knows. He can’t protect his family and friends and he can’t protect himself from the truth – whatever that is.
Everything depends on how honest he is with the Falcons and the NFL and that is the bottom-line.
Here are some things to watch…If Daunte Culpepper signs with Atlanta, he was targeted for Baltimore but now it looks like Falcons VP/GM Rich McKay may want to talk with him. Meanwhile former Dolphin teammate Joey Harrington is already in camp along with D. J. Shockley from Georgia and former Ravens QB and Louisville grad Chris Redman. So look for new coach Bobby Petrino's to be teaching his system to more people than just Vick.
