You Don’t Need a Crystal Ball to See What’s Going On
Posted March 14th, 2008 by Russ CohenSo Billy Crystal made his fake MLB debut and he struckout but he made contact! Should I cheer? Should I say, “well he got the count to 3-1 and he made contact” or should I be embarrassed for him because at the age of 60 he looked ridiculous, and so do the Yankees and the commissioner of baseball who had to approve the idea.
The Yanks have been looking to make a splash this offseason (talking down to Red Sox nation etc.) because Hank Steinbrenner seems to want to put his stamp all over this team instead of just doing what many owners do and that’s work behind the scenes and sit in their luxury suite eating shrimp and other delicacies.
I read that Crystal had a high-school baseball career at Long Beach High School that is located on Long Island, in New York. I was born near there and lived there for many years and even went to the same college as the actor (Nassau Community College), many years later, and I feel safe saying that school hasn’t produced a lot of baseball talent.
The Yankees let an actor, who hasn’t been relevant in years, take away an at-bat from a player who may have been striving for that one plate appearance as a Yankee before he calls it a career. The odds of getting an MLB at-bat are astronomical and this event was as bad as a college giving a famous person an “honorary doctorate” without having to do the work.
I think we are all in agreement that Crystal would have never made it to the BIGS yet he lived out his dream. Are you kidding me? He could have lived out his dream in a non-televised split squad game before the spring training season began. Why didn’t he do that? I think it’s for publicity. I just noticed that he is out on tour for his stand up career and if you go to IMDB you will see he hasn’t been a “star” in a movie since “Analyze That” back in 2002. If you want to count his voice work in the movie “Cars” two years ago that’s fine but he is the 43rd actor credited for the movie.
I give the Yankees credit it gave them something to talk about during their broadcast. I wonder, did anybody ask him why he wasn’t wearing a Yankee hat in the movie “City Slickers”? Well if you remember that one he was wearing a hat of the team’s cross-town rival, the New York Mets. I can honestly tell you there isn’t a Met fan on earth that would ever wear a hat of the so-called enemy and their fan base wouldn’t put on the blue and orange. NEVER!
That’s when I wish that famous people would just go to games and get pictured in the hats that they want to wear rather than telling the world who they are a fan of. Hillary Clinton is a Yankees fan, ok; I never knew that before she was running for public office. Until I heard a radio spot for the Mets I never knew Kelly Ripa was a fan. I only started to hear about it when Willie Randolph became her next-door neighbor. Did he convert her? Maybe, but in all of these cases it doesn’t come off as credible.
